Daily Bites – 12/9/13

by spiceaholic on December 9, 2013

someecards.com - I'm going to start a new diet, but first I have to eat all the junkfood in the house so it's not there to tempt me.

Hmmm, I think I may have to start off each Monday with these!  Does anybody else do the same thing and eat up all the junk before starting over? Oh come on, I know I’m not the only one!

So I’m off to a not-so-great start with the daily eats posting — one for all of last week.  I took pics here and there, but didn’t get around to posting. Sorry!

Here we go:

Breakfast part 1 — Carnation Breakfast Essentials – chocolate malt flavor, mixed with 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a splash of chocolate coffee creamer.  I saw the Carnation stuff at the store and thought it’d be a nice break from the Weight Watchers or Wonderslim smoothies I have sometimes in the mornings.  My commute to work can be about an hour, so these keep me going until I get to work when I remember to have them, plus I get some vitamins and calcium out of them. I know “real” food is better, but I would say this is better than nothing or hitting the drive-thru.

Breakfast part 2 — Today was such an icky day, cold and rainy, so I had some tea when I got into work and that kept me full until midmorning.  Then I broke out a Nutrisystem blueberry muffin and two satsuma mandarin oranges.  I love these, they’re better than clementines!

So the deal with the Nutrisystem stuff is that I ordered some at the beginning of this year to help me get through tax season craziness.  And as with any plan, it worked as long as I worked it.  I still get shipments here and there because I actually do like some of the food and it’s convenient to have it around for when Mr. Spice and I are really busy or feeling lazy.  I’d delayed my last order as long as I could, but ran out of extensions, so we just got a shipment last week which means you’ll see some of these popping up in my daily eats.

Lunch was an old favorite — Weight Watchers Spicy Szechwan noodles with chicken.  I added some broccoli slaw and some extra grilled chicken — the veggies make it more filling, and the extra protein gives it more staying power.  Pretty much anytime I do a frozen dinner I doctor it up with extra veggies at the bare minimum.

Afternoon snack — Celestial Seasonings Sweet Harvest Pumpkin tea, and some Nutrisytem “Oreos.”  All this nasty cold rainy weather has me craving tea, so I’ve been trying out some new flavors.  I usually drink Earl Grey, but wanted to try some “dessert” types.  This tea was good, not really pumpkin-y, more like pumpkin pie spices.  The cookies weren’t bad either — they got some good reviews on the message boards, and then were temporarily discontinued just as I wanted to try them, so once they came back I made sure to order some.  I’m pretty sure if you buy the sugar-free version of Oreos it’d be the same as these.

Pre-dinner snack — Rosemary saltines, some white cheddar, and Spanish chorizo.  I really struggle with what to eat around 6. I’m usually driving home by then and starving. I really should just eat dinner as soon as I get home, but since Mr. Spice usually gets home much later than I do, I like to eat with him.  This means I usually snack a bunch because I’m so hungry, then we eat, and then we snack again. I know, I know.  Anyway, tonight’s snack was premeditated and pretty dang good!

Dinner!  One of my weeknight favorites — baked salmon fillets with seasoning and steamed baby spinach.  I stock up on wild Sockeye salmon when it’s on sale and love to bake it with either jerk or tandoori seasoning.  It goes so well with the spinach. Sometimes we’ll have some brown rice along with it.  Tonight the salmon turned out perfectly — melt in your mouth tender and flavorful.  I baked it at 350 for 20 minutes and used parchment paper this time instead of foil, so maybe that was the trick?

I’ve been a little out of control with the after-dinner snacking as we’re watching tv or playing on the internet — I really just need to not buy tempting stuff, but sometimes you just want a little something after dinner.  Like tonight — after such a savory dinner I wanted just a little taste of chocolate.  I remembered that I’d bought a couple holiday-themed bars, so we each tried a square from each one.  We liked the gingerbread spice one the best.  We were good and saved the rest for later.

That’s it for tonight, I hope to have something tomorrow night!
